A holistically healthy life

Maintaining one's own health is the top priority for many people. It is the basis for a sustainably healthy life (1). Mental well-being counts just as much as physical well-being. But what measures are taken with regard to a healthy life? The answer to this question is to be answered with the help of monthly YAS.life surveys.

Surveys on healthy living, health management and prevention

YAS.life already supports users in permanently integrating health-conscious behaviour into their lives. Exercise, fitness and other measures for healthy living are rewarded with attractive premiums and thus promote positive habit formation. However, in addition to physical activity, aspects such as nutrition, health and leading a certain lifestyle also play a role. In order to gain a comprehensive insight into what preventive measures are taken in addition to daily exercise, YAS.life is launching short monthly surveys that address health-related topics.

October 2020: Health-conscious nutrition

In October 2020, the first survey on the topic of "Health-conscious nutrition" was launched. An important part of leading a healthy lifestyle is to eat a varied diet. Nutrients such as carbohydrates are important for supplying the body with energy. Fruits and vegetables, in turn, contain vital nutrients and minerals that can have a positive effect on the body's metabolism (2). The survey shows, among other things, how many of the app users surveyed adhere to the recommendation of the German Nutrition Society (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Ernährung e.V.). This includes the daily consumption of 5 portions of fruit and vegetables per day, which should consist of 3 portions of vegetables (around 400 grams) and 2 portions of fruit (around 250 grams). In total, the survey includes four questions around the topic of "health-conscious nutrition". The number of responses was 1,087 and includes the apps YAS, Proactive, BIGforfit as well as mhplus move. The resulting results were then evaluated and presented in the following infographic:

November 2020: First aid

The next survey, released in November 2020, addresses the topic of first aid. Mastering basic first aid practices can save lives in an emergency. But for many people, a relevant course already lies years, if not decades, in the past. Once you've passed your driver's license, you've also checked off the first aid course, and in a few cases, you'll brush up on it. But what happens when an emergency occurs? Can the memory of the specific application of the stable side position, the stopping of bleeding or cardiopulmonary resuscitation be reconstructed? The survey, which contains a total of four questions, aims to clarify how many of the app users surveyed actually feel able to provide first aid. The number of participants here was 2,473 and includes the apps YAS, Proactive, BIGforfit, mhplus move, "Meine-Fitness" app of VKB & UKV. The evaluated results can be seen in the following infographic.

December 2020: Blood donation

According to the German Red Cross, 80% of people living in Germany need a blood donation once in their life (3). It is therefore clear that donating blood is essential for the medical care of patients. However, only 47% of people in Germany have ever donated blood (4). Comparing these two figures, it becomes clear that the willingness to donate blood is too low compared to the need. To address the importance of this issue, the YAS.life survey in December revolved around important questions on the topic of "blood donation". Among other things, how many of the app users surveyed have ever donated blood and whether they do so on a regular basis. The total number of participants was 2,971 and includes the apps YAS, Proactive, BIGforfit, mhplus move, "Meine-Fitness" app of VKB & UKV. An excerpt of the results can be seen in the following infographic.

January 2021: Smoking

Smoking is more than just a bad habit, because unlike impatience or being constantly late, it has harmful effects on health. Fortunately, according to an analysis by the World Health Organization (WHO), the number of smokers is steadily decreasing (5). This is also evident in our YAS.life survey from January. 91% of the app users surveyed said that they do not smoke. The total number of participants in this survey was 4,222 and includes the apps YAS, Proactive, BIGforfit, mhplus move, "Meine-Fitness" app from VKB & UKV as well as the RWE MOTION app from BKK RWE. The following infographic shows an excerpt of the most relevant results:

February 2021: Cancer screening

With increasing age, the topic of "cancer prevention" becomes more and more important. It serves the early detection of cancer and generally applies: The earlier a diagnosis and treatment takes place, the better the prognosis. Nevertheless, many people do not take advantage of an appropriate early detection examination. The reasons for this can vary: fear of a diagnosis, ignorance or simply forgetfulness. With our YAS.life survey in February, we wanted to know how our users feel about the topic of "cancer screening". A total of 3,401 people took part in the survey. The survey includes beneficiaries of the following apps: YAS, Proactive, BIGforfit, mhplus move, "Meine-Fitness" app from VKB & UKV, and RWE Motion from BKK RWE. The following infographic shows the most relevant results.

March 2021: Allergy

Many people suffer from allergies. This becomes clear in the March survey on the subject of allergies. Some allergies can become life-threatening, while others only cause annoying discomfort. Allergies can be contracted at different stages of life, so it is a good idea to have a regular allergy test. Do people take medication for allergies? Is taking the medication based on self-diagnosis? Whether the app users suffer from an allergy, and if so, which allergy, were just two of the seven questions asked. The number of participants in our March survey was 2,917 and includes the apps YAS, Proactive, BIGforfit, mhplus move, "Meine-Fitness" app from VKB & UKV and RWE Motion from BKK RWE. The evaluated results can be seen in the following infographic.

April 2021: Vaccinate

Vaccination is currently an important topic that has received more media attention than ever before. Whether in the media or among friends, vaccination as a term is currently accompanying us in our everyday lives. For this reason, we conducted our monthly survey with active users of our apps on this topic. We not only asked about the general vaccination mood, but also included questions about the specific attitude towards the Corona vaccination.

The number of participants in our April survey was 3,901 and includes the apps YAS, Proactive, BIGforfit, mhplus move, "Meine-Fitness" app of VKB & UKV as well as the RWE Motion app from BKK RWE were used. The evaluated results can be seen in the following infographic.

May 2021: Caffeine consumption

Whether it's espresso, cappuccino or Americano - coffee, or "black gold", is part of the daily routine for many people. The Tchibo Coffee Report 2020 shows that on average 3.6 cups are drunk per day in Germany. 54.1% of those surveyed even said they drink coffee when they are feeling bad. So coffee is also a "soul comforter". In our monthly survey series in May, we wanted to know what the coffee consumption of our app users is like. In addition to coffee, we were interested in their attitudes towards caffeinated drinks such as tea, mate, energy drinks, cola, etc.

The survey series focuses mainly on questions about healthy behaviours and asks users of the YAS.life apps.

June 2021: Diet

From vegan nutrition, to clean eating, to avoiding gluten - the variety of different diets is large. Many are similar, but many are also the complete opposite of each other. While fish, meat and dairy products make up the main part of the diet in the case of low carb, a vegan diet does completely without animal products. And the reasons for a particular diet can be just as different. In our monthly survey series on healthy behaviours, we asked our app users in June about special habits and supplement increases in their diet.

July 2021: Digital health applications

Digitalisation is part of many areas of our lives - now also in the field of health. Apps on prescription? Since 2020, this has actually been possible. The digital applications are supposed to detect or monitor illnesses or help cure or alleviate them. We were interested in what our users think about the new digital revolution in the health sector. Is everyone even aware of the term "DiGA" or is there still a lot of education needed before the new treatment method finds its way into households? We asked.

August 2021: Alcohol

A glass of wine with dinner, a cold beer after work or a glass of sparkling wine for a toast. Even though alcohol consumption is on the decline in Germany, it is considered normal and socially accepted. Especially when we find ourselves in a group of people - at birthday parties, weddings, Christmas celebrations, etc. The list of social occasions where alcohol is drunk is long. And what do the users of our apps think about the topic of "alcohol consumption"? We asked. Not only on behaviour, but also on how our users assess the impact on their health. The results can be found in our August infographic:

September 2021: Risky sports

No risk, no fun - that's the motto for many when they deliberately expose themselves to danger in certain risky sports. Solo free climbing, slacklining at great heights, steep descents on a mountain bike, base jumping, etc. The list of risky sports is long. The list of risky sports is long. But is it really only the "danger" that drives some people when, instead of long bike rides on cycle paths, they prefer to ride down a mountainous slope on a mountain bike? We wanted to know what our users think about risky sports and what drives them to take the risk. Are they also aware of the dangers or do they need more education? We asked.

October 2021: Chronic diseases

"Sickness is a night side of life, a rather troublesome citizenship. Everyone who is born has two citizenships, one in the realm of the healthy and one in the realm of the sick". This is what the US author Susan Sontag writes about "chronic illness". We can reduce the risk of disease considerably through healthy lifestyles. But once the disease has manifested itself, those affected must learn to live with it, which is not always easy for many. What are the thoughts of our app users on the topic of "chronic diseases"? How many of them might be affected? Find out more now in our evaluations of the survey in October.
